The problem with cooling lubricant
Nowadays cooling lubrication is essential for many machine processes. They fulfil a variety of tasks such as lubrication, cooling, flushing, cleaning and preservation in order to increase machine production speed, surface quality, protection of the tools as well as reduction of operating costs.
Due to their composition water-mixed cooling lubricants are inevitably subject to microbial colonisation (contamination) during the usage. In water-mixed cooling lubricants, microorganisms find excellent living conditions due to a rich supply of nutrients. This can result not only in technical problems in the production processes but also in possible health hazards for the operating personnel. Among other things, the microbial colonisation can lead to a considerable reduction in the service life of the cooling lubricant due to the degradation of cooling lubricant components.
Therefore, biocides are usually used to prevent the growth of microorganisms. However, these can also affect health due to their often toxic though sanitizing effects.
