The problem with varnish
Many of our household or industrial products are painted. The topcoat layers are applied for aesthetic or functional purposes (e.g. protection against water or corrosion) or for both.
Today most coatings are based on water instead of solvents to protect the environment. However, bacteria in the coatings can grow to such an extent that they might impair the surface coating quality. Often biocides will be used to reduce the bacterias. But chemicals also contradict the environmental friendliness of the water-based varnish and they are only effective to a limited extent as the germs adapt to them over time.
