The problem with rainwater
Unfortunately rain and thus rainwater is not always available when it is needed. Especially for agriculture, the collection of rainwater and its use for irrigation is becoming increasingly important.
Rainwater can be contaminated by a number of sources. When humans consume contaminated water, they can become sick. The germs can also be transferred by edible vegetables. Therefore, EU Regulation 2020/741 sets minimum requirements for the reuse of water in agriculture. Depending on the plants' intended use, they may only be irrigated with a defined water quality.
Not only in agriculture, but also in commercial and industrial real estate, the use of rainwater, e.g. for flushing toilets or as service water, is becoming increasingly important due to rising freshwater and wastewater costs. However, contamination of the collected rainwater with microorganisms that cause diseases poses a health risk. Therefore, rainwater must be treated and disinfected before any further use.
